Description Philadelphia's Academy of Music is managed by the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, and stands as the focus of cultural and history for the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located at the cross between Broad & Locust Streets, it is the oldest standing continuous grand opera house in the United States. Famed production companies that appear at the Academy of Music, include, but are not limited to the Philadelphia Orchestra Association, the Philly Pops with Peter Nero and the Pennsylvania Ballet.
The Academy of Music was opened to the public back of a Century and a half ago, in 1857. The Academy of Music Facade and stage was fashioned in the style of the La Scala Opera House located in Milan, Italy. The Academy's performance area was designed to bring the best in acoustic and optical effects of any one event. The seating area is done so in an open horseshoe shape, which provides better visibility to most seats, and the entire auditorium is enclosed by a 3 foot sold brick wall. Further the walls were specifically designed on the inner side whereby the inner side of the wall s lined with a specialized studding and pine boards. This is done so to absorb sounds and prevent echoes. All told the entire facility is made up of 2 main event areas; the main hall which is in constant use for opera, ballet and concerts has a maximum capacity for 2,897 guests; and the Ballroom, which was actually designed in the style of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles in France, has a capacity for 350 guests and/or patrons.
The Academy of Music offers complete accessibility for the handicapped or phyiscally disadvantaged. The Academy of Music is accessible to wheelchair's from the east lobby entrance on Broad Street. An accessible entrance on the south side of the building also allows for direct entry to the main lobby. Furthermore, Wheelchair-accessible seat locations are available throughout the 2 main areas of the venue. Guests and patrons with handicap or disabilities will also be happy to know that each level of the venue is accessible via elevator, and restrooms on all levels are ADA compliant.
