Description In 1996 the Philadelphia Orchestra was, at the time, in an ongoing process of trying to put together a plan to create a buildikng and/or venue of it's own. At the same time, then Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell, current Pennsylvania Governor, was really pushing to bring to reality a venue that would offer events and appearances for some of Philadelphia's greatest and most prestigious art companies. Through some negotiations, and thereby finding that all parties were "on the same page" the idea of a merged venue concept was born. A piece of land was aquired through the supporters of the Philadelphia Orchestra at Broad and Bruce Streets in Philadelphia. From there concept became reality and today we have the Kimmel Center Organization which runs and manages three unique venues. First the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, which is a concert hall containing 2,500 seats. The second is the Perelman Theater, was is a 650 seat recital thearter. Third is the newly upgraded Academy of Music, which is a 2,900 venue, separately owned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and managed by the Kimmel Center Organization.
The mission of the Kimmel Center is quite simple. The organziers of the Kimmel Center have created a not-for-porfit organization, which quite frankly brings some of the most enriching performing arts programs in the nation. They do so by offering audiences a full selection of diverse events throughout the calendar year and world-class as well as world-renowned artists. Further, it is the Kimmel Center's main objective to be able to offer the performing arts to the entire community.
The Kimmel Center and it's multiple venues offer the following resident companies; he Philadelphia Orchestra, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, American Theater Arts for Youth, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, PHILADANCO!, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Ballet.
The Kimmel Center and all of it's separate venues, were constructed in order to offer maximum accessibility to all of their guests, including the handicap and physically disadvantaged. For those guests with hearing or far distance site impairment, the Kimmel Center offers the Open Caption Service. Basically, upon calling ahead for the service at 215-893-1999, the service allows patrons to read the words that are being spoken at any event. Second, assisted listening devices are available at on a first come, first served basis. Patrons and guests must ask Management Services upon arrival for this service. For those patrons or guests in need of wheelchair information, the Kimmel Center was built in order to accommodate wheelchair accessibility. Wheelchair accessibility entrances are found on the East Side of the Building on the Broad Street Entrance and the North Side of the Building on the Spruce Street Entrance. Further, the Academy of Music Venue is accessible for wheelchairs from the east lobby on Broad Street. Patrons can further find ease in getting to the upper levels of all venues as the center is equipped with wheelchair accessible elevators. Last, all restrooms found through the Kimmel Center Facility are ADA-compliant, and availabel on all levels.
