Description Once known as the Shubert Theater, and located at 250 South Broad Street in Center City Philadelphia, along the Avenue of the Arts, the Merriam Theater, has offered top notch performers and events since it was built in 1918. Great performers like Mickey Rooney, John Barrymore, Laurence Olivier and Sammy Davis Jr., have graced the stage at the Merriam.
The name of the theater was officially renamed for John W. Merriam. Merriam was a famed Philadelphia area developer and a well known friend of the Univery of the Arts, which owns the theater. Over the years the Merriam Theater has presented great events like Broadway Shows, musical concerts, and also serves as home of the Pennsylvania Ballet and serves as host to the Gilber and Sullivan International Festival. The Theater has seating for 1,790 patrons.
